George Berry, of Downingtown, was charged with 15 counts of rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated indecent assault of a child, and related offenses, the Chester County District Attorney's office, and Downingtown police said in a joint statement released Monday.
Berry, 70, was identified after the victim reported the assault to police on Jan. 6 at Brandywine Hospital, authorities said.
The assault, according to the girl, took place at the Downingtown home that the child and mother shared with Berry.
In a Jan. 7 interview with the girl, police learned that Berry sexually abused the victim "dozens of times" between Jan. 2020 and Dec. 2021, according to the DA's office.
Investigators tracked Berry to Houston, TX where he was arrested on Jan. 12 and later extradited to Chester County on Jan. 23, authorities said.
“George Berry engaged in a systemic pattern of horrific abuse of a child he had a duty to protect," DA Deb Ryan said.
"Now, a 12-year-old must live with the memories of suffering and harm he inflicted on her. We will prosecute this man to the fullest extent to bring justice and healing to the victim.”
He is being held at Chester County Prison on $1 million cash bail.
His preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 2.
